Early in 2022, our current Rotary Club President, Joanne Lee, heard of some interesting volunteer opportunities through the Child Care Action Council (CCAC).
Our Club provided volunteers for an “In Place” project and thoroughly enjoyed the interaction and type of work involved. The CCAC later approached us about a “Traffic Garden” later in 2022, and the planning meetings began. The Olympia Capital Centennial Rotary Club is a “hands-on” club, and the project fit our capacity and scope perfectly, providing both the financial support and volunteer leadership required.
During the planning process, Past Presidents James Wege (Civil Engineer) and Treacy Duerfeldt (Construction Insurance Underwriter) were able to lend insight and perspective that improved the project’s efficiencies, simplicity, and sustainability. Total costs were reduced by over 33% with various functionality improvements, including signage with a QR pointing to tutorial videos so that the Traffic Garden can be used anytime in addition to neighborhood Bike Rodeos.
Cooperation between the CCAC, Rotary Club, and the Olympia School District was fantastic.
There were always adequate volunteers. Logistic challenges were always met with enthusiasm and any needed innovation.
Most importantly, everybody had fun working together and could see terrific results at every turn.
We look forward to replicating the Traffic Garden project at other desired locations so all kids and their parents can have a safe place to learn and practice safety.
Funds raised for the Traffic Garden came from the Rotary Club of Olympia Capital Centennial’s Teddy Bear Tea Party and its various sponsors. See more at HERE.
