PHRASES THAT SHOULD ALWAYS BE AVOIDED

No matter how you look at it, people will remember the exact words, and exactly how they made them feel, which isn’t always a good thing. As Rotarians, we lead by example. Here are 17 “hot” phrases that should always be avoided:

  1. “Person X is doing better.”
  2. “Bring me solutions, not problems.”
  3. “I don’t have any feedback for you.”
  4. “You don’t need to know why—just execute.”
  5. “I’ll do it myself.”
  6. “Because I’m the boss.”
  7. “Why did you do it that way?”
  8. “Good job.” (Be sincere and add details about the successful task)
  9. “You need to do more with less.”
  10. “That’s your problem.”
  11. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but…”
  12. “I don’t have time right now.”
  13. “Are you questioning my authority?”
  14. “Our boss is a moron.”
  15. “My predecessor was terrible.”
  16. “I’m disappointed in you.”
  17. “It’s not my fault.”
