OUR LITERACY COMMITTEE HAD A BUSY YEAR!

The Comox Rotary Literacy Committee has been busy preparing ‘Thank-you Books’ to deliver to three of the four schools the Club supports in the Comox Valley, three elementary and one middle school.

The ‘Thank-you Books’ was a suggestion by Past Chair LaCosta Squires who, back in 2019, suggested that the Club give our guest speakers a new book as a thank-you. This book would then be presented to a school in the guest’s name! Our guest speakers have been thrilled with our presentations, which have really worked out well, as our guests have been attending our Club meetings via Zoom from all over the world, for the past 2 years.

At our November meeting, committee members Karla Hammond, Chair, Marianne van Vliet and John McMullen prepared Book Plates for 19 books with the name of the guest who received them as a ‘Thank-you Book’.

During early December, the Literacy Committee presented the Club’s Thank-you Books to three of the four schools the Club supports in the Comox Valley, along with our $500 donation to EDAS (Everybody Deserves a Smile). Karla Hammond, Chair and LaCosta Squires, presented six books to Kim Marks, Librarian Ecole Puntledge Elementary School. LaCosta, who is also the Club’s EDAS Rep, presented our EDAS donation cheque as well as a cash donation to Kim, who accepted on behalf of EDAS. The children were excited and quick to inspect the new books in the library. Kim Marks thanked Comox Rotary for their continued support and the lovely ‘Christmas surprise’ of new books for the school. John McMullen presented seven books to Rick Appel, Librarian of Courtenay Elementary School. (photo not available) David Peat was pleased to present seven books to Lake Trail Middle School. (photo pending) Marianne van Vliet will present Arden School with their books in the spring.
