Tacoma North Rotary Members Head “Back to School”- Loaded with supplies for teachers and students.
With education as one of its major focuses, Tacoma North Rotary Club has a long history of work in our local elementary schools- filling backpacks, being reading mentors, teaching on Junior Achievement Day events, providing music program support, and many more collaborations over the years. With the opportunity last year with the partnership with District 5020 for a District Grant to provide bigger ticket items requested by the principals, Tacoma North enjoyed entering into a new level of relationship with two schools with new campus buildings- Downing Elementary School and Skyline Elementary School.
This summer, as the start of school approached, the club asked the principals and counselors for lists of supplies teachers and students might need, particularly those who had parents who were unable to provide the required items for their kids. Members were asked to pick up items while they were out shopping while the school supply items were on sale, or to donate to the “shopping fund” if they wished to participate. Tacoma North members came to meetings with boxes and bags of supplies, and a number of members generously donated for the purchase of supplies teachers had requested for their classrooms.
Two full trunk loads of backpacks, crayons, markers, notebooks, scissors, and pencils, as well as teacher-requested classroom snacks and classroom supplies, made their way to the two schools in the first two weeks of school. Gratefully received and with a happy delivery team, Tacoma North Rotary Club again showed its commitment to kids in their community.
