D5020 APPROVES INCREASE OF GLOBAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO $45,000 EACH

Help us find our next District 5020 Scholars!

Each year, District 5020 awards a number of valuable scholarships for post-graduate studies, typically Masters or PhD degrees, in a country other than Canada and the USA.  These are awarded to highly motivated candidates with an interest in a career that aligns with the values of Rotary.  In recent years, our D5020 Rotary scholars have studied at major UK universities such as Oxford University, London School of Economics, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Strathclyde University, and Queen’s University, Belfast as well as at leading universities in other countries including Sweden and Australia.

Candidates for the scholarships must be endorsed by both a club and the District.  Hence, we need clubs to spread the word and identify any potential candidates for these scholarships.

Rotary District 5020 Ambassadorial Scholarships (RDAS)

Each RDAS provides $15,000 to support one year of postgrad studies at an accredited university in a country other than the USA or Canada. The deadline for receiving applications for the DRAS for studies in 2024-25 is January 15, 2024.

The RDAS scholar’s area of study must support Rotary’s goal of encouraging and fostering the ideal of service above self.

Global Grant Scholarships

If a successful RDAS candidate is accepted into a post-graduate degree program, and the studies are expected to lead to sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of Rotary International’s areas of focus, the scholar may also apply to upgrade the RDAS to a Global Grant Scholarships of US$45,000, funded by The Rotary Foundation’s World Fund.   Due to the high cost of out-of-country tuition, this was increased by District 5020 from $30,000 to $45,000 for studies beginning after July 1, 2024.

Help us find candidates.  If you know anyone who might be interested, please pass on this information.

Please ask your club members, through announcements, newsletters, emails and social media, to identify possible applicants and bring their attention to the DRAS scholarship.  Detailed information about the scholarships as well as the application forms are available at

https://rotary5020.org/page/scholarships/

The deadline for complete applications for the RDAS is Jan. 15, 2024.  The selection of the winning applicants will be done by the District 5020 Scholarship Committee in early February 2024.    The committee may then endorse any successful candidate for a Global Grant Scholarship and mentor the candidate through the GGS application process which has an application deadline of June 30, 2024.

An encouraging note:  For the past five years, every successful applicant for the RDAS was endorsed by the committee and was successful in being awarded a full Global grant Scholarship.

Rotary International, The Rotary Foundation and District 5020 have a remarkable history of commitment to the scholarship programs, which have the ability to transform individual lives and entire communities.
