GIG HARBOR ROTARY PARTNERS WITH DOLLY PARTON TO HELP KIDS

Dolly Parton came and conquered the State of Washington. By proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee, August 15 was declared Dolly Parton Imagination Library Day. This program has delivered over 200 million books to children worldwide since it began in 1995 and gives over 2 million books each month!

Dolly dazzled an invitation-only audience of enthusiastic supporters, including multiple Rotary Clubs, of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to celebrate the day. These supporters have worked diligently to bring the program to every zip code in the state of Washington. – 715 zip codes and 65,000 potential readers from ages 0 to 5! A goal that was achieved this year.

In Pierce County, The Rotary Club of Gig Harbor and their partner, the Altrusa Club of Gig Harbor, lead the way, being the first Dolly Parton affiliate in the county and signing up 1117 children under the age of 5 In the first year of participation. Each child will receive a free book every month in the mail, with their name on it, at no cost to their parents! Isn’t that amazing!

Why is this important? Because 90% of a child’s brain development occurs by the time, they are 5. Reading books to them stimulates their imaginations and expands their understanding, as well as shapes language and listening skills to prepare them for kindergarten.

Around Gig Harbor, you can see the Dolly Parton Imagination Library tent at kid-friendly events, working to get the remaining 2000 eligible children in the area signed up.

The program is a wonderful opportunity for a Rotary club with a passion for literacy and youth to make an impact and build public awareness in your community. Check for an affiliate near your club for additional information. https://www.imaginationlibrarywashington.org/affiliate_directory
