Every Tuesday, members of the Rotary Club of Sidney by the Sea go to the Food Distribution Warehouse to pick up groceries for distribution at our local elementary school.
We had an overflowing table with milk, yogurt, bread, cookies, frozen ground beef, eggplants, guava, peppers, beets, zucchini, onions, potatoes, beets, jicama, radishes and more. Parents come by when they are collecting their children.
It’s especially gratifying to see parents from the Middle East and Asia who are excited about items like guava and jicama and know exactly what to do with it. One of the first to come is a community member who is part of a support group for a Syrian refugee family. She always leaves with two bulging bags and is grateful for them.
We aim to hand out everything on the table, and with the help of the teachers, we usually achieve our goal.
The Food Distribution Warehouse was established thanks to a major fundraiser by Victoria area clubs.
