Understanding and learning was the goal of the recent Shelton Skookum Rotary distribution of dictionaries to a local school. Community Service Director Candace Cahill organized the event with Mary M. Knight school Librarian Darlene Henson, in Elma, Washington. Under a previous campaign, nearly 800 dictionaries had been distributed in 2018 and 2019 to Mason County area schools. Cahill and her husband, Area Governor Phil Grigg, had been storing the few remaining dictionaries and other books from the previous events at their home.
In early December, the Mary M. Knight school’s 25 fifth and sixth-grade students were assembled in the library for the them to receive their own dictionary. Skookum Rotarians Gary Schuyten, Phil Grigg, and President Joyce Gorny, along with Cahill, helped the students dive into the books.
Although all were masked, you could see the smiles on the student’s faces for the adventure into their new dictionary. The dictionaries distributed in December were remaining, and the small size of the school allowed for the team to provide one to each student.
Another book giveaway in conjunction with Skookum Rotary Corporate Member Sound Learning will take place in March of 2022.
