Tacoma South Rotary Club and Compassion Washington Host Inaugural SAFE Summit

Rotary International envisions a world where people unite to drive meaningful change locally and globally. It is with this spirit that Tacoma South Rotary and Compassion Washington are hosting the first SAFE – Summit Advancing Freedom from Exploitation on January 11, 2024 in Tacoma, Washington.

The epidemic of human exploitation compelled Rotary to make it a focus. This inaugural summit brings together stakeholders from key sectors – business, churches, community advocacy, education, healthcare, law enforcement and family support – to address this critical issue in Pierce County.

“Exploitation hides in the shadows, and only through awareness, education and advocacy can we shine a light,” said Christine Gilge, Tacoma South Rotary member and Compassion Washington Founder & Ministry Director. “The SAFE Summit provides a pioneering platform in Pierce County to inspire action.”

Lisa Hansen, Founder of “Power Over Predators” is the summit’s keynote speaker. Dr. Susanna L. Southworth, Past President of the Rotary Ending Sex Trafficking initiative, will also lend her expertise. Attendees will join discussions on understanding trafficking, latest research, resources, prevention, intervention, healing and recovery.

Tacoma South Rotary Club and Compassion Washington hope to establish this as an annual awareness event that sparks year-long advocacy. It is the intention to inspire other Rotary clubs to adopt and adapt this pilot summit throughout Washington.

“Our goal is to motivate and mobilize community partners to create meaningful change in legislation, support services, prevention education and trauma-informed care,” said Teresa Maxwell, Tacoma South Rotary club member.
